What would you do if your best friend was forced to leave just because of her religion? If that doesn’t sound so appealing then you should be glad you didn’t live in Copenhagen, Denmark during the time of World War II like Annemarie and her best friend Ellen.
Annemarie Johanson was a tall, fast; blond Christian girl. Ellen Rosen was an amazing actress in training, brown haired Jewish girl. The Johansons and the Rosens were best friends so when the Nazis started to round up the Jews, the Johansons had to help. One day, walking home from school Annemarie wanted to have a race. Ellen hesitated, but joined in. They were rounding a corner when a Nazi officer shouted, “Halt!” The girls stopped dead in their tracks. He let them off with a warning. The girls knew they should’ve been more careful. They knew that if you ran down a street you would raise suspicion. It was a while after that when they found out what the Nazis were planning to do. What will happen to the Rosens? What will happen to Ellen? If you want to know, read the book “Number the Stars” by Lois Lowry.
